Downloading and caching offline Google maps on your latest Nexus 9 tablet or Nexus 6 phones or even on the old models like Nexus 5 & Nexus 7 2013 tablet is always handy. It can be used offline when data (internet) connection is not available specially while you are travelling. This simple guide shows you how to download Google maps offline on your Nexus devices like Nexus 9 and Nexus 6 with Android Lollipop 5.0 and later versions.
Even though we have published a guide about best Navigation apps for Nexus tablets and phones, but they will be needing internet connection to work properly. Saving the Google maps offline and use with in-built GPS sensors in Nexus devices will be an ideal way to use with minimal cost.
You can use this method to cache the map or route you are going to travel before starting your trip when internet connection is available. As an important note, caching and saving map offline map option is available on specific areas in the world map only. It doesn’t work everywhere around the world.

In earlier Google maps app versions, you can download a particular area of map by selecting the area as shown below and cache it offline.
Unfortunately this option is not available on latest new Google maps in Nexus 7, 9 and Nexus phones 5 and Nexus 6 with latest Android 4.4 KitKat and Android 5.0 Lollipop.
Trick – How to Download Maps on Nexus 7 2013/2012 and Nexus 5, 6, 9
Though some of the below screenshots had been taken in Android 4.4, but still it is applicable for Android 5.0 Lollipop too.
1) Open Google maps apps on your device and zoom the area you want to cache and save offline. Try to cache larger area if you want. But, there is a limit on it. If you capture much larger area, it will say to zoom in to save the map offline.
Also, caching and downloading Google maps in Android devices are not available for all areas in the world. For example, I could not download the map in my area where I live. I think it’s available only on specific countries maps.
Here is the example of the message if you select larger area of the Google maps to download offline in Nexus 6 or Nexus 9 tablet.
2) Once you have zoomed in the enough area, you will get the below option to save the map.
3) Google has improved the offline maps savings now. You can give a name for the offline map area while saving. That will be easy to refer it later or access multiple saved/cached Google maps on your Nexus devices.
Once you pressed Save, you can see the progress of saving the offline map.

Just to see whether it’s working fine, I have disabled the all connectivity (changed to air plane mode) and zoomed in to see the map. That worked fine, see below.
